District of Columbia Requirement Details for Real Estate Continuing Education

Continuing Education and License Renewal Date:

  • 2/28 every odd-numbered year for Brokers and Property Managers

While there may be COVID extensions, we recommend that students renew their licenses by their scheduled dates since it is uncertain when the emergency order will be lifted.

Hours Required By The State: 15 hours

2021-2023 Cycle Requirements:

Broker – effective now (03/01/2021 – 02/28/2023)
9 hours – Mandatory (DC Fair Housing; DC Ethics; DC Legislative Update)
3 hours – Property Management
3 hours – Broker Supervision* (Course content outline pending)

Reciprocity – effective now (03/01/2021 – 02/28/2023)
3 hours – DC Fair Housing
3 hours – Property Management 

Please Note: If you are seeking return to active status and have been on inactive status for 5 years or more, you will be considered a new applicant and will be required to meet all current requirements for licensure.  If this is the case, you will need to do one of the following:

  • Apply to the DC Real Estate Commission as a brand new, first time applicant; INCLUDING completing the pre-licensing course and passing the licensing examination.
  • Apply to the DC Real Estate Commission using a currently active real estate license from another jurisdiction via the reciprocity or endorsement process.

The CE Shop’s Offering: 15 hours

Reporting: The OPLA has shut down their licensing management system effective 04/01/2021.  Course completions will not be reported to DC until we receive further direction from the OPLA.

Expiration Date of Course: Course expiration dates vary by course but are generally three months after order date. Each course has an individual expiration date which is listed in your account.

Final Exams: Final exams must be passed with at least a 75% and may be taken as many times as necessary in order to pass. 

Certificates: Upon completion of the course, The CE Shop will provide students with an electronic Certificate of Completion. Certificates will remain in your account for a minimum of five years, should you need additional copies. Please refer to your license renewal application to determine if you need to submit your Certificate of Completion with your license renewal request. Course completion dates are recorded using Central Standard Time. Please note that the date of your Certificate of Completion will reflect this.

Duplicate Courses:  please note that a licensee (active or reinstatement) will NOT be given credit on transcripts for taking the same course(s) within the same cycle.

CE Exemptions: Newly licensed brokers, salespersons and property managers are exempt from taking CE courses for the remainder of a licensing cycle during which their license is obtained, but are required to renew the license when that first cycle ends.  CE credits taken by (new) licensees do not roll over and cannot be carried forward into the next cycle.

License Renewal Process:  The process to renew in this state is to log in to the licensing system online and follow the prompts to renew.
